Stoney Creek United Church - A Brief History
Our first congregation built its first church in the year of 1792, when
the population of Upper Canada (Ontario) was only 10,000. Many of
the settlers were U.E.L. (United Empire Loyalists.)
We are one of the oldest protestant congregations in Ontario.
In 1925 our Methodist congregation voted in favour of union, bringing us
into the United Church of Canada.
On our present site, our first building was dedicated on June 5, 1904. A
Christian Education Building was added and dedicated in 1953.
During the 1950's our Sunday school roster was at 500. Overflow at
our two Sunday morning services prompted us to erect a new Sanctuary to
the West side of the old sanctuary. This addition was dedicated on
February 2, 1969.
We now have a large complex with two street level entrances and a
Chairlift to the Sanctuary level. There is an excellent sound system in
both Sanctuaries and the Church Hall. The main sanctuary is equipped
with a Hearing Assist System for the benefit of our hearing impaired
members. At the present time we are adding Air Conditioning to
most of the building.
We have a very active membership of over 300 on our Historic Roll, plus
approximately 50 adherents with average Sunday attendance at about 225,
including a growing number of children and youth. Our strengths include a dynamic
Youth Leader, an excellent Choir, an active U.C.W., community-oriented
midweek programs and several midweek programs run by outside
organizations.
